warns Nasa solar storms in 2013
The Earth and space will come into contact in a way that is new to the history of mankind.
Increased solar activity in 2013 was the focus of a forum held last week in Washington by the National Space Weather, a U.S. government agency as part of several organizations dedicated to meteorology and research .
"The sun is awakening from a long sleep and in the coming years we expect to see very high levels of solar activity. At the same time, our technological society has developed a sensitivity to solar storms unprecedented," said Richard Fisher, by the Heliophysics Division at NASA.
According to the expert, a solar storm at this time twenty times could cause economic damage that Hurricane Katrina.
The National Academy of Sciences made the problem two years ago in a report called 'severe weather events in space-Impacts on society and the economy', which took into account how people in the 21 st century depends on high-tech systems in everyday life.
"GPS navigation, air travel, financial services and communications can not work for intense solar activity," says NASA, and warns that much of the damage can be mitigated if managers know that a storm is coming . "Putting satellites in 'safe mode' and disconnecting transformers can protect these resources from electrical damage, "says Fisher.
